Dog Training on TV

Our favorite way to learn how to train your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is by watching TV!

Bentley's personal favorite is the Dog Whisperer Cesar Milan's show on National Geographic TV.  Find out when his show is televised in your area, or read his blog for dog training tips.

Animal Planet's website offers a Dog Guide that includes some training information, but check their current and upcoming listings for TV shows that focus on dogs and training.

General Training Tips

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are wonderful pets, but a well-behaved Cavalier is a true joy!  Some of the training tips Bentley and I have learned include:
  • Start early with your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy. Teach him proper etiquette from the day you bring him home. Be gentle and patient when your puppy is small, and don't expect miracles in his first few weeks. But don't let bad habits settle in at the beginning that you will have to break later.

  • Prevention is probably the very best training technique. If you can avoid bad behavior, your Cavalier will learn to be well-behaved by default. This is essentially the secret behind crate training to housebreak your dog. If you never give your Cavalier an opportunity to have an "accident" in your house, he will learn that relieving himself outdoors is his only option, making housebreaking a breeze!

  • Old dogs can learn new tricks! No matter how poorly trained your dog has been up to now, you can make a difference in the future by giving your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel patient, consistent messages about how you want him to behave.

  • If your dog misbehaves on a regular basis, take a good look in the mirror because most behavior problems are the result of a pet owner giving their dog an unintended message, or a mixed signal.  Consider what behavior of your dog you are really rewarding and whether you are consistently teaching your pet what you want him to know. Sometimes the best way to disfuse bad behavior is to ignore it, as oftentimes your pet is misbehaving just to get your attention - even if it means you're screaming at him! Try ignoring your pet's antics and only give him your  attention when he shows the desired behavior.
Be sure to ask your vet and your pet's breeder for their recommendations for dog training and obedience schools in your local area. But for now, we've listed some of our favorite resources below.
